Sep. 12: Public Observing Event at Williamstown Historical Museum

We’re excited to announce an NBAS Public Observing Event on September 12th at the Williamstown Historical Museum.

Things start off at 7:30 PM with a public lecture: “30 Years of Exoplanets: What have we learned” by NBAS member, Dr. Bob Donahue showing how the discovery of exoplanets has completely changed our understanding of how the solar system formed, what types of planets are common around other stars, and the continued search for Earth-like planets.

After the talk, we’ll gather to view the skies with telescopes brought in by the NBAS.

Location and Directions

The Williamstown Historical Museum is housed in the historic South Center School building at:

32 New Ashford Road (Rt. 7 South), Williamstown, MA 01267 (next to the Store at Five Corners)

Parking is out front of the museum. The observing area is on the grass outside the barn behind the museum β€” the barn itself is accessible, but reaching it means crossing grass rather than paved surface, so plan footwear accordingly.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Weather / cloud policy: the talk happens rain or shine; telescope viewing afterward is weather-dependent. Any changes will be posted on this website β€” check back before you head out if conditions look uncertain.
  • What to bring: even early September evenings can turn chilly once the sun’s down, so dress warm. A red flashlight, if you have one, helps preserve everyone’s night vision once we’re observing.
  • Cost: free.
  • Accessibility: the museum building itself is accessible; the outdoor observing area beyond the barn is reached over grass, not pavement.
  • Event Rules: please review our Event Rules before attending.
