Northern Berkshire Astronomical Society

Whatever your experience, you belong under our skies.

Getting Started

Every astronomer β€” amateur or professional β€” started somewhere. A borrowed telescope. A dark field. A night someone pointed up and said “look.”

These guides are here to help you get from “I’ve always wondered about that” to your first real observation, and from there to wherever your own curiosity takes you. The practical stuff: equipment, terminology, finding your way around the sky. And underneath all of it, the harder thing to teach β€” what it feels like when the universe stops being abstract and starts being yours.

That’s what becoming an astronomer actually means.
